Since the book is written in Chinese I would like to give some explanation to some of the topics that impressed me.
I love the cover story of the elder lady “Zhao Ji Ying” and her daughter “Hou Shen Rong”. Both of them are bound feet, Ms. Zhao was 102 years old and Ms. Hou was 78 years old. Ms. Zhao was born in the year of 1894 at the remoted village in Shandong province. Her feet was bound at the age of 7. She claimed the painful experience of bound feet was an endless talk even talked for 3 whole days could not totally expressed her ache. In order to bind a pair of lovely lotus feet, her feet was pressed with heavy bricks. She could not walk for 1 year when she started the foot binding. However, she did the same thing to her daughter. Ms. Hou’s feet was bound at the age of 7 just like her mother. Ms. Zhao believed bound feet was a prove to show the girl was a good girl. As bound feet girl needed to undergo endless suffering to obtain a pair of tiny feet that means the girl was tough enough to come across any misfortune in her life.
In view of Ms. Zhao’s life she was really a tough woman. She got married at 17 years old and had 2 sons and 1 daughter. She became a widow when she was 52 years old. She earned the livings for the whole family when her husband passed away. She did the field work at the day time and weaved the fabric at the night time. She walked over 20 miles with her little feet to the market for the sale of her handmade fabric every 3 days. She saved for every penny to give the school fee for her 2 sons to receive education even though she was a illiterate. She was highly respected in her village as she was long life and had 5 generations in her family. Her daughter took care of her at the rest of her life. Ms. Zhao left the world at the year of 1996.
Another story I would like to highlight is the bound feet ladies village in Yunnan province. There is a village in Yunnan we called “Liu Yi” still remain around 100 bound feet ladies lives there. Previously, Yunnan is a very remoted area, the poor transportion made this region preserve many old custom and culture. This chapter had interviewed with several bound feet ladies they are all healthy and enjoy disco dancing and Taji as their daily exercise. Very interesting! Please enjoy!
